FAQ

Why a membership group rather than a course?

The idea for a membership group was inspired by Doris's 2017 research project, in which she interviewed Canadian women from coast to coast to coast. Doris's goal was to determine which aspects of money women wanted to learn about through courses. What she discovered is that the list of topics requested is too large to cover through courses. Some areas, like investing, came up repeatedly. These are the areas that are addressed through courses.

The membership group, on the other hand, allows for an exploration of a range of topics throughout the year. It also provides an opportunity to consistently apply new skills and knowledge. This is what builds new habits and, ultimately, helps you achieve better results. The membership format also offers ongoing support and accountability as we work through every aspect of personal finance.

Think of it this way: Instead of paying a huge fee for a private coach, you have an entire community of them 24/7.

What's the difference between the monthly and annual memberships?

The monthly membership was developed to allow flexibility for women who wish to explore the group for a few months to see if it's a fit for them. The latter offers access to the meetings, webinars, online resources, and the closed discussion group. It can be cancelled at any time.

The annual membership offers the full range of benefits including discounts to workshops and other YFL events, the opportunity to bring your spouse to the June meeting, a glass of wine at the Wine & Celebration night, a complimentary Strategy Call with Doris, and a reduced monthly fee. The membership fee is billed once per year and is not refundable because of the additional benefits.

When are the meetings?

The in-person meetings will take place the last Tuesday of every month. The location and meeting details are posted in the Upcoming Events page.

What if I don't live in the Ottawa area? How can I participate in the meetings?

In the Fall of 2018, we will launch online meetings that will cover the same content delivered at the in-person meetings. Annual members participating online-only will have access to all the perks of the annual membership, except for the glass of wine at the July Celebration night.

They are welcome attend any of the in-person meetings should they be in the Ottawa area on a meeting night.

What if I'm busy the night of the meeting? Will it be recorded for later viewing?

The in-person meetings will not be recorded, however annual members will also have access to the online meetings once those are available in the Fall of 2018.

Which topics will be covered?

The topics to be covered will come from two sources. First, members will be able to email their questions to Doris. If enough people have questions about a particular area, it will be addressed at an upcoming meeting.

The second source of topics comes from Doris's research project. The list includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Understanding your money mindset and how it affects your results - uncovering behavioral patterns and identifying areas that may be holding you back.
  • Understanding different kinds of debt - how interest works for and against you, best practices for credit cards, and how to get out of debt.
  • How to tackle budgeting and planning - what are the best tools and practices, how to stay on track, and how to deal with uncertain and/or varying income.
  • Understanding investing - what it is, how it works, basic options, why it matters for women, tackling risk, understanding fees, and how to evaluate financial advisors.
  • Knowing how to protect yourself financially - what that means, understanding the risk points, determining how to structure your finances for maximum protection, identifying trade-offs, and completing key documents.
  • How to be a financially healthy couple - what does that mean, how to go about it, how to tackle a difference in priorities or approaches, how to address a disparity in incomes, and understanding potential models.
  • Creating a good credit score - how does it work, what hurts or helps your score, what shows up on your score, how can you fix past problems like late payments, collections, bankruptcies, and consumer proposals.
  • Taxes - What do wealthy people know and do that the rest of the population does not? Tips and tricks to keep more money in your pocket.
  • Mastering credit - What's the difference between debit cards, credit cards, lines of credit, and other credit instruments? How can you use them to your greatest advantage? What are the pros and cons of each?

The topic for the month's upcoming meeting will be posted in the Upcoming Events section.

What people are saying:

Doris's presentation was SO much more than a chat about finances…this was all about getting to a deeper understanding of the psyche behind my everyday financial habits, why I spend or approach saving the way I do. It was about understanding how my own upbringing and my parent's approach to finances impacts me now. But most importantly, this talk was about being challenged and motivated and lifted up by an inspiring educator who made me want to be and do better! Immediately following Doris' talk, my husband and I had a financial "date" which has changed EVERYTHING!Michelle Szkwarek, Military Family Services Community Coordinator, Washington DC
